Designer Rugs

Thursday, April 29th, 2010

Designer Rugs are a unique addition to your home, if you have ornate walls and furniture then many people choose a shaggy rug to add comfort to the room, but if your home has been devorated with a particular style of theme in mind then a designer rug can be ideal.

When people think of designers they often think expensive! This isn’t always the case as a designer rug can be reasonably price right up to hundreds and thousands of pounds! What ever your budget you can usually find a good quality designer rug that will be the envy of all your friends.

Designer rugs are not like high fashion designer clothes where they are not always suitable for every day use, designer rugs are at the end of the day – a rug. Rugs are meant to be durable and hard wearing therefore even designer rugs have to meet this standard.

The difference between a designer rug and a cheap rug or a modern rug is designer rugs have a particular style in mind. The work that goes into a designer rug from design concept, creation and completion usually takes longer and many designer rugs are not mass marketed thus making them a bit more expensive.

A modern rug can be quite versatile depending on the decoration you can use it in a number of different places, whereas a designer rug works better if you arrange your room to compliment the rug. Even if the designer rug is not a feature it’s strong design means you need to consider its placement more carefully. That being said a designer rug can make your living room or bedroom the envy of your visitors and create a really powerful interior statement.

My favourite designer rugs are the Brighton Rocks Rugs, decadence rugs and union jack rugs, what are your favourites? Comment and let us know…

10 tips for decorating with a Rug

Saturday, April 24th, 2010

Decorating with a modern rug can give your room a completely new look without having to blow the budget. A rug can also finish off your room by tying all the different pieces of furniture together visually, a rug can add warmth another layer to your room.

Here are our top 10 tips for decorating with a Rug?

  1. When you have a large area to fill you may want to use more than one rug. Make sure your rugs are not the same size as this will visually cut the room in half. However, your rugs should complement each other in style, or you could end up with a conflicting or unpleasant effect.
  2. Use a rug to define or separate areas, such as seating or dining areas, and foyers.
  3. If you have a favourite rug, use this as the basis of your colour scheme for your room. However, if you are adding a rug after the room has been decorated make sure it complements or ties in with the existing decoration.
  4. You can use rugs to visually turn up the volume in a room or even quieten it down if necessary. If your overall decoration is quite opulent or ornate (ie ornate wallpaper) you should go for a rug that is a bit more subtle. If your room is fairly subdued with plainer walls then you can add use the rug as an interesting focal point with a more interesting pattern.
  5. If you are going to use a rug as a focal point you can make a bold statement by painting your walls a colour that picks up some of the accent tones in the rug.
  6. You don’t always have to use a rug as a floor piece; many rugs are very beautifully stitched with lovely patterns, so you can always use a rug as a wall hanging to create a different focal point.
  7. Arrange your furniture around the room to figure out which shapes look best with your rug, you can go for different options including having furniture on a large rug, or having a square set up of furniture around an oval rug. You may want to try this out before you buy your rug and picture which shaped rug would suit the room the best.
  8. When you buy a large rug to be a room size rug, don’t buy it to the same measurements of the actual room always subtract about 3 feet from the length and width of the overall floor space.
  9. Hall Runners should be about 4 inches narrower than your hallway and 18 to 24 inches shorter.
  10. Rugs can slip around on hard floors and surfaces so always invest in a proper liner that will hold your rug in place, this is especially important if your rug is in a place where people could slip and fall on the rug.

Another popular modern rug is the Shaped rug, once upon a time people used traditional sqaure or rectangle rugs but this left you with very geometric styles in your home, especially if you have a sqaure room.

For something a little different for your childs room we even have car rugs which will help encourage their active imagination!

Stay Cosy with a Shaggy Rug

Sunday, April 18th, 2010

It has been a long and cold winter and not surprisingly many home owners are buying Shaggy rugs to help keep them warm and comfortable.

When it’s cold you tend to spend more time in doors so you want your house to be homely and a nice shaggy rug can make your living room seem snug.

As winter approaches and the weather gets colder we all tend to spend more time in doors where it’s nice and warm! You don’t want to be walking around on a cold hard floor, feeling a nice warm rug under your toes is a lovely comfortable feeling. Shaggy Rugs hold in warmth because they have a thick pile and soft feel, rugs will always add warmth to your floor but a shaggy pile has long fibres that trap the warmth.

It’s not just the living room that a Shaggy rug is ideal for, it can add a nice feature to the bedroom or dining room.

You can get Shaggy rugs that are wool rugs or synthetic, either way they are a great addition to any home and will help you keep cosy and warm until summer finally arrives.

Looking after your Rug

Thursday, April 15th, 2010

When you buy a new rug it always looks great but if you want it to continue to look great then you need to look after it and keep it clean.

Rugs are meant to be fairly hard wearing but over time without care and attention your rug can start to look old that is why it is important you look after your rugs.

  1. If you can you should always vacuum your rug once a week on both sides, if you don’t have time to vacuum every week try to aim at least to vacuum both sides of your rug on a bi weekly basis.
  2. Land of Rugs recommend you rotate your rugs at least once a year, this means turning your rug 180 degrees or end to end, this may mean you have to move your furniture around a bit but it will help minimise wear on certain parts of the rug. It can also help lift the room if you have a patterned rug as it will change the way the pattern goes.
  3. Rugs and carpets will get dirty as people and animals walk over them or they get spilled on. To propoerly clean your rug you will need a steam cleaner, this will be more throrough and will be less harmful to the rug than some chemical cleaners. You can use professional cleaming companies but this can be quite expensive, we advise to judge the intensity of the stain before looking for a professional cleaner.
  4. If you feel your rug needs more than a steam cleaner you can buy or rent a carpet cleaner/extractor. This will do quite a good job of cleaning your rug but will not steam all the fibres so be aware it may be more of a superficial clean than deep clean of your rug.
  5. A lot of modern rugs are treated to be stain resistant which will delay any stains from setting on the fibres but this will still stain if you leae it too long before treating.
  6. If you need to transport your rug make sure you always roll the rug rather than transport it. Never fold your rug, when moving your rug from place to place make sure the rolled rug never has anything heavy pressing down on it.Try to prevent your rug getting creased but if it does the crease will come out when the rug is laid flast and walked over a few times.

If you have any questions you want to ask about looking after your rug please feel free to comment.

Common Rug Sizes

Wednesday, April 14th, 2010

Following on from yesterday’s article on Rug sizes I thought I would go into more detail on the different size rugs you have to choose from. This is not limited but looking into some of the more popular rug sizes available and what they are most commonly used for.

2 x 4 – This size rug is usually referred to as a scatter rug and used in bathrooms, kitchens and the doorway.

3 x 5 – This is the next size up from the scatter Rug and is usually found in entrances, halls andr kitchens.

4 x 6 – This size rug is found in hallways and entrances it is slightly larger again and can also be used under a coffee table

5 x 8 – This size rug is one of the most popular sizes sold it is a good size for a living room if  you want your rug to show quite a lot of the floor but still come up to the sofa.

6 x 9 – A larger size than the 5 x 8 the 6 x 9 is also often used in a living room, it will reach your sofa and still show plenty of floor space.

7 x 10 – This is a rarer Rug size but is ideal for dining rooms that are quite small. It will fit under a dining table well and separate a dining area from a living space.

8 x 10 – This size rug is the most common dining room rug, it is large enough for the chairs to still be on the rug when they are pulled back so the chairs won’t be unstable whilst eating. The 8 x 10 rug is also popular in living rooms as it covers a lot of space and can be very warm and comforting to have rug beneath your feet, a lot of modern rugs come in this size.

8 x 11 – This rug size is very similar to the 8 x 10, it is used in much the same way as a dining room and living room rug, but ideal for dining tables that are slightly longer.

9 x 12 – If you have a large dining room or living room then the 9 x 12 rug is ideal for you it is a very popular size rug and offers a lot of floor coverage and comfort.

10 x 14 – The 10 x 14 is a very large rug which is usually too big for average sized rooms, but if you have large rooms in your home you should consider this size as a large rug is very comfortable and stylish.

These are just a few popular rug sizes but for larger homes you can get mansion rugs and even custom ordered rugs to suit your needs.

What size rug should you choose?

Tuesday, April 13th, 2010

When purchasing a new rug it is important to choose the right size rug for your room, depending on the type of rug, the room it is going into a rug can make a bold statement and if it is too big or too small may not look right in the area. You can use a rug to define a particular area, such as a dining room area can be defined by a rug that may be a couple of feet larger than the dining table.

It can also be confusing as some oriental rugs and modern rugs will use a metric measuring system rather than traditional imperial measurements. When buying a rug in metres you should remember that there are 3.28 feet in a metre so they rarely fit to a perfect metre size.

Working out the correct size of rug can depend on the function of the rug, is the rug to keep your feet warm, go under a coffee table or just to cover a blemish? Depending on the purpose you can work out the amount of space you want the rug to cover.

Personal preference can also play a part in choosing the correct size rug, large rugs can make the room seem cosy and warm, but a smaller rug may show off more of your floor. If you have a strong pattern on your rug you need to make sure the rug doesn’t completely take over the room, therefore this either needs to be a slightly smaller size, or needs to be balanced out by the furniture and decorations.

Land of Rugs has lots of Rugs in different styles and sizes that can help you choose.

Wool Rugs and Synthetic Rugs

Monday, April 12th, 2010

Many of our customers ask us about the difference between wool rugs and synthetic rugs, it is important to know the difference so you can choose which rug type is better for you.

Synthetic Rugs are often made up of fibers that are “continuous filament”, this means the strand goes on infinitely-until it is cut by a machine. Other fibers are “staple filaments” these fibres are much shorter in length. The most common staple filament is wool although there are some artificial fibers that are “staple filament”. When a wool rug is made, there will often be “dead yarns” in the rug, these are yarns and threads that did not make it to the back/underside of the rug due to the fibres not being very long. These means the threads are not held in place as well.

Wool rugs have many more benefits than synthetic rugs they are generally a much better quality with better colour, durability and softer not to mention being more flame resistant.

When purchasing a new wool rug you need to keep in mind that to get the most from your wool rug you need to look after it but with a little TLC they can last for decades. Whereas synthetic rugs need little or no care but will only last a few years as their texture tends to look crushed.
