Cheap Indoor Rugs Are Back In Rage!History of Rugs

The origin of rugs dates back to the 5th or 4th millennium bc when thick rugs were first made in the western and central Asia as covering for earthen floors. They were also used then as saddle covers, blankets, tomb covers, storage bags, and tent doorways

Later, these rugs began to be used to a creative effect. Oriental carpets that were introduced into Europe in the 16th to 17th century were considered too expensive to be used as coverings for the floors they were instead used to decorate walls. This transformed the utility of rugs from mediocre floor coverings to radical instruments of decoration. Even today, rugs are popular as decorations for the wall in Russia.

The art of rug weaving reached its highest peak in the 16th century Persia. In the West, out of the box rugs and carpets started to be produced at factories in 17th century France and 18th century England. Back then, most rugs were made out of sheep’s wool and colored with natural dyes, until the 19th century, when chemical dyes were introduced.

Rug weaving picked pace in India with the invasion of Muslim conquerors in the 8th century, but the original surviving Indian rugs were manufactured during the 16th and 17th centuries under the rule of the Mughals. The English, Portuguese and Dutch brought many of these rugs during early maritime trade with India.
