In places where winter hits and in generally cold areas, thick shaggy rugs are probably the best thing to have to cover cold floors. Of course, this means that a little more money needs to be spent and there will be a whole lot of maintenance just to keep these rugs clean.
Thick rugs are really popular, however, despite the fact that they are difficult to care for. But as difficult as they are to clean, the task is not impossible. It just needs a little more skill and handling than that which is given to thinner, more regular rugs. Also, there may be a few tools needed and a whole lot of attention when using those tools. Here is some advice for working with these rugs.
- Whether you like it or not, a carpet really needs to be vacuumed. Even on thin carpet, this is quite a tiring to do. But with a thick carpet and all the dirt that can gather in between its threads, vacuuming is a necessity. It has to be done at least twice a week especially if the thick shaggy rugs experience a lot of foot traffic.
- Mind the vacuum beater bars. These are the machines power bars that are attached to a vacuum so that one can clean hard floors or thin carpets. Some vacuums have detachable ones but most vacuums have them built in. It is important to make sure that these beater bars are disabled when using them on shaggy carpets because they may loosen the twists in a thin carpet and make them overly fluffy. This is a sign of damage so keep the beaters off when using a vacuum for these rugs specifically.
- A carpet rake should be used to loosen dirt in a thick carpet. These rakes look like garden rakes but have flexible spikes that will not get tangled with the carpet threads. It is important that you are using a rake that has flexible spikes so that no holes or tears will appear on the thick shaggy rugs. Raking a carpet is like grooming or combing it. Do this as regularly as the vacuum sessions to loosen stubborn dirt.
- Wash and shampoo. A thick carpet is not an easy thing to wash and if it has a lot of rich dyes in its design, these colors might wash off when a strong detergent is used. Make sure to buy weak detergents. Also be sure to use more water than the detergent. Wash the carpet gently and if you vacuum a lot, the washing sessions will be far and few. Twice a year is fine for a carpet that is not stepped on too much.
Thick shaggy rugs are not easy to take care of so be sure that you are ready for the extra work needed to maintain them. They are an awesome and warm item to have in the house and if cared for properly, they can last for a very long time before having to be replaced.
